Zavada Signs/Happ Start

A local pro baseball player has landed with a familiar team. Clay Zavada has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. The lefty reliever, who graduated from Streator High School, was a free agent following his release from the Cincinnati Reds. The 27 year-old Zavada has been assigned to the Cardinals Triple-A team, the Memphis Red Birds. In related news, St. Bede grad J-A Happ, who starts for the Houston Astros, started last night against the Milwaukee Brewers. The 30 year-old pitched six shut-out innings, giving up seven hits and a walk. On the year he has three wins and three losses.
Foreclosure Increase

Foreclosure activity ticked upward last month around parts of our area. RealtyTrac says more first-time foreclosure notices went out in the mail in LaSalle County last month than in March, by a rate of 133-percent. The same was true in the Ottawa and Streator areas. Meanwhile, there was a 44-percent increase in foreclosures in Grundy County. However, activity fell by 20-percent in Marshall County and by 67-percent in Livingston County.
April Area Foreclosure Filings

Area foreclosure filings went up in April. RealtyTrac reports LaSalle County saw the biggest increase in the region, up 53-percent from the previous month. Foreclosure filings in Lee County rose 31-percent, and filings in Bureau County went up 28-percent from March to April numbers. State foreclosure filings fell nine-percent in April.
NCILC Meeting

Members of the North Central Illinois Logistics Council met yesterday to hear about the 2012 economy. I-V-C-C Economics Professor Abhijeet (AH-bah-JEET) Bhattocharya (BAH-tah-char-E-ah) gave an hour and a half presentation showing national data and trends of interest to those in attendance, like Pam Furlan, Executive Director of BEST Incorporated, who says issues that impact workers and employers, as well as gas prices are important to them.
Tim Robey (ROW-bee) with Double D Express says this will give them insight on what to expect for the coming year, and possible purchasing decisions.
Rising Federal Student Loans

With the possibility of federal student loan rates rising in the near future, one area college official is not happy about it. IVCC Financial Director Patti Williamson says a rate increase will only make student loan debt worse.
Williamson says IVCC specifically could see a dropped in older student enrollment with the fear of acquiring a larger amount debt at a later age.
14th Annual Kids Fishing Expo

An annual event designed to teach kids about the joy of fishing is back again tomorrow. Mark Dudek (DO-dack) with the Kid’s Fishing Expo says they have expanded promotions for the event, now in its 14th year, to cover as far north as Earlville, and as far south as Streator. He says this event is free for kids and there is no need to register.
Dudek (DO-dack) says there is existing fish already at Baker Lake in Peru, but they will stock it with hybrid sunfish, which are relatively easy to catch. He says they would appreciate volunteers to help out.
Dudek (DO-dack) says the goal is for one-thousand kids to participate and for good weather.
Engle Lane Opening

The 55th Season at Engle Lane Theater kicks off this weekend. President of the Community Players of Streator Kathy Missel says the production of “The Fantasticks” opens this Sunday.
The production opens Sunday with a 2pm performance and then 7:30pm show times the rest of the week till Saturday May 26th. Tickets for the “Fantasticks” are available at the Engle Lane Box Office.
