KICKER – Presidents day, which falls annually on this third Monday of February honors the birth months of the county’s most distinguished leaders – George Washington and Abrahan Lincoln. North Central Illinois is a hub for historic sites where our 16th President ventured. In Ottawa, folks can take a stroll in Washington Square Park, the site of the first Lincoln -Douglas debates of 1858. The park features a fountain and reflecting pool graced by statues of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. In Putnam County, pass through the village of Hennepin to find the historic 1839 Putnam County Courthouse named after Israel Putnam, one of few generals promoted to the rank of Major General during the Revolutionary War by General George Washington. The courthouse is also where Lincoln practiced law and you can preview a copy of a letter written by him to a village resident in 1845.
