SPRINGFIELD – The new law reforms that would have eliminated the longstanding practice of requiring cash bail for criminal defendants is on hold across the entire state of Illinois after a court ruling. The Illinois Supreme Court on Saturday ordered a motion to suspend the new rules, which were to have taken effect January 1. Last week an Illinois Circuit Judge ruled that a provision to eliminate the setting of cash bail for those accused of crimes in the state is unconstitutional. Governor J.B. Pritzker and Attorney General Kwame Raoul are expected to appeal the decision.
