MENDOTA – A fire in the 700 block of Illinois Ave in Mendota closed city streets downtown Wednesday. At 12:30 PM a call came in for smoke in an upstairs dwelling. Area departments responded with mutual aid within 45 minutes the fire was extinguished. According to responders at the scene, no residents were home at the time, however two dogs perished. Two apartments were heavily damaged by smoke and a business on the first floor also sustained damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Mendota Fire Department.
