MAGGIE VALLEY, N.C. (AP) — As if seeing an elk running around the woods of western North Carolina wasn’t enough of a sight — imagine seeing one running around with pieces of a shredded hammock tangled in its antlers. News reports say a man called the sheriff’s department in Haywood County on Thanksgiving to report that an elk was stuck in his yard with its antlers tangled in a hammock. Jim Beaver says elk often wander around his yard, eating apples and playing with the hammock. This time, the elk’s play resulted in an entanglement — and at last report, the elk, hammock strands and all, still wanders back into the yard occasionally.
