EPA to spend nearly $3 million on toxic site cleanup in Lee County

By: SC National Guard

DIXON – The EPA will be spending nearly $3 million to remove toxic materials from the former Dixon Iron & Metal Company on Monroe Ave in Dixon.  The project will take about sixty days and began this week.

Dixon was told by the EPA that additional concerns exist due to run off water into the Rock River.  During a visit earlier this year, they observed surface waters breaching a protective berm.  Testing revealed the presence of elevated levels of PCBs in Rock River sediment.

The EPA is planning on evaluating the PCB contamination in the future.  The City of Dixon would like to remind its residents and visitors to check the Illinois Fish Advisory before consuming any fish caught in the Rock River.  The Illinois Fish Advisory contains recommendations on the consumption of fish from Illinois’ rivers.
