Farmers coping through frigid temps, more efforts keeping livestock warm

By: USDA NRCS

OTTAWA – Farmers are waging through the frigid weather, taking extra measures to keep their livestock warm. LaSalle County Farm Bureau President David Isermann says while the farmers are coping through the temperatures, the mud, sleet and slush have been just as bad, if not worse. Isermann says cattle have been affected the most, with messy muddy grounds making it hard for them to stay warm and dry. He says farmers are using more bedding than usual, despite hay running short due to wet conditions during production late summer and fall last year. According to Isermann, dryer days are a necessity for planting this Spring.
