Farmers may not catch a break to plant corn this week

OTTAWA – Local farmers that haven’t planted corn may not get their chance on what’s forecast to be yet another week of unfit weather. The National Weather Service predicts showers and thunderstorms into Thursday, delaying efforts to put corn in the ground before the June 5th mark. According to Farm Bureau President David Isermann, farmers are forced to consider planting the crop at all. After June 5th, farmers can lose up to 1 percent or more on insurance coverage every day they haven’t planted. Overall, farmers will make their decision based off of individual circumstances like insurance coverage, what their average yield has been in the past and what the market is calling for. Isermann says based off of low soybean prices, the market would rather have corn, but its all up to the weather to determine if thats possible. He says farmers need at least ten days of dry weather to plant.
