Flu season to impact blood supply

By: Armed Services Blood Program

CHICAGO – The Centers for Disease Control is expecting a severe flu season this year, and that could have a negative impact on the nation’s blood supply. The American Red Cross will have upcoming donation events to address the blood shortage, and donors of all blood types – especially type O – are needed. Those who come to give around the Thanksgiving holiday, Nov. 24-28, will receive a pair of Red Cross socks, while supplies last.
Upcoming opportunities include
11/18 8:45 a.m. – 1 p.m., Streator Park Place Conference Center, 406 Hickory Street Streator
11/18 11:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., First United Methodist Church, 316 S. Church Street Princeton
To donate blood, individuals need to bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification that are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.
