SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved spending a portion of the $3.1 million in Grade Crossing Protection Funds to help pay for the installation of automatic warning devices at a number of crossings in Bureau, LaSalle, and Putnam Counties. Pine Street, Plain Street, Putnam Street and Pike Street crossings in Peru will see new lights, gates and signals. Also slated for improvements are Depot Street and East Street in Depue, East Nebraska Street in Bureau Junction and East Main Street in Tiskilwa. The projects are expected to take about 18 months to complete.
“Public safety near and around trains is a high priority for the Illinois Commerce Commission. Installing automatic warning devices at these crossings will provide pedestrians, motorists, and rail employees with greater protection. The allocation of Grade Crossing Protection Funds enables project like these to become a reality,” said ICC Commissioner Carrie Zalewski.
