SPRINGFIELD — Nationwide, more children than ever have been diagnosed with a terrifying paralyzing illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that there are 158 confirmed cases so far this year, with the Illinois Department of Public Health finding 9 across the state. That’s more than the two that were found in 2016 in Illinois. Parents should be on the lookout for any signs of a facial droop, weakness in moving eyes, or difficulty with swallowing or slurred speech. If your child has these symptoms, they advise you should seek medical care at once. Health officials call the condition acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM.
