IVAR rescues dozens of hoarded dogs and cats

PERU – Saturday the Illinois Valley Animal Rescue took in around 40 small dogs and Monday plan on picking up more dogs and cats.  They say a total of 50 dogs and around 10 cats and kittens are being collected from a location in Northern LaSalle County.  Heather from Bishop’s Small Dog Rescue took 10 of them in.

IVAR Director Chris Tomsha put out a call and around a dozen volunteers showed up to help unload the crates, all stepping up to help during the unprecedented health crisis.

The dogs reportedly are well but will be needing shots and checked out. Donations are appreciated. Items that would be helpful are sheets and pillowcases to help make the animals as comfortable as possible while waiting for their forever homes. With so many animals the cost for vetting will be substantial and every little bit helps. Monetary donations can be made at illinoisvalleyanimalrescue.net.

Chris Tomsha said “IVAR doesn’t stop when animals need help”

Volunteer Samantha Setchell said on Sunday “There were so many dogs but there were also so many volunteers that showed up to help. It was both heartwarming and heartbreaking and the same time.”

Setchell noted the teamwork was amazing, even during the pandemic.

“Not only did we have so many dogs to unload and bring inside but we had to figure out how to do it while also staying away from each other.”
