OGLESBY – A rural Oglesby couple’s love of farming and raising cattle will be memorialized in a scholarship established recently with the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation.

The Ron and Sandy Greening Memorial Agriculture Scholarship is the result of a $2,000 gift from their children, Bonnie Jasiek and Richard Greening, both of Oglesby. The annual $500 scholarship will be awarded to a La Salle County sophomore planning a career in the ag industry.

Ron and Sandy raised Polled Hereford cattle, boarded horses and bred registered appaloosa horses on a small farm outside Oglesby.

A self-employed carpenter, Ron was also a beef and grain farmer “and very proud to be a part of that industry,” said Jasiek. He worked previously at Marquette Cement and Bakelite/Union Carbide. An Eagle Scout, Ron served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1955 to 1957.

Both he and Sandy were avid fly and pan fishermen who loved doing both on vacations to Minocqua, Wis.

The former Sandy Whitaker worked as a quality control inspector at Badge-a-Minit in Oglesby but her first love was working on the farm with Ron, whom she married Dec. 23, 1955. Sandy died at age 76 in 2012 and Ron died at 83 in August 2017.
