OGLESBY – Lillian Rodrigues, a student at Illinois Valley Community College, has been named a 2019 New Century Transfer Pathway Scholar and will receive a $2,250 scholarship. Over 2,000 students were nominated from more than 1,200 college campuses across the country. Only one New Century Transfer Pathway Scholar is selected from each state. New Century Transfer Pathway Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. Rodrigues plans to transfer to Northern Illinois University next fall to major in microbiology, eventually become a physician’s assistant and return home to practice rural medicine.
In late August, she received $3,000 from the IVCC Foundation after being named the 21st Century Scholar. As president of IVCC’s Hispanic Leadership Team, Rodrigues led a fundraising campaign for victims of natural disasters in South America and provided hygiene kits and other comfort items to children going into foster care. As vice president of the college’s Red Cross chapter, she’s helped run blood drives, installed fire alarms, packed trailers for disaster relief and earned certifications in First Aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and shelter setup.
The daughter of Rosa and Dennis Watson is also a volunteer at OSF St. Paul Medical Center in Mendota and tutored third graders in a Hispanic classroom last year.
The New Century program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa, and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).
“We congratulate Lillian for receiving this prestigious scholarship, and we are honored to recognize her outstanding achievements,” said Phi Theta Kappa’s President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner.
New Century Transfer Pathway Scholars will be recognized at Phi Theta Kappa’s Presidents Breakfast in Orlando, Fla., on April 15 during the AACC Convention. Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society recognizing academic achievements of community college students. The Society is made up of more than 3.5 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in 10 nations.
