SHELBYVILLE, IL – A Shelbyville man has been charged with first degree murder in connection of the death of a pregnant woman. According to the Illinois State Police, they presented the case against 24-year-old Deven A. Barger, to the Shelby County State’s Attorney’s Office where he has been charged with First Degree Murder and Intentional Homicide of an Unborn Child. The charges stem from his alleged involvement in the Monday, shooting death of his pregnant girlfriend, 22-year-old Samantha L. Cushing, also of Shelbyville. Polcie say later Monday morning, the Effingham Police Department attempted to take Barger into custody at which time he reportedly fled, leading police on a multi-county chase, ending in Christian County, where Barger was safely taken into custody. He is being held by the Illinois Department of Corrections on $5,000,000.
