SUBLETTE – A house fire seriously injured a Sublette man Sunday and a child made a harrowing escape out of a second story window. The Sublette Fire Department was called to the 700 block of West Santee Street around 12:30 PM for a fully involved single family home. Authorities say a parent and a 7-year-old were able to exit the home via a door, but a 5-year-old escaped out of a second story window.
Neighbors Curtis Ryan Kessel and Nick Wilson saw the child in a window on the 2nd story as they approached the house. Curtis scaled the back fence and climbed to the 2nd story window, grabbed the child by the ankle and lowered the boy down to Nick Wilson, saving the child’s life.
According to Sublette Fire Chief Kevin Schultz, one adult was transferred to a Rockford Hospital with what was described as serious injures and two children were taken to a Dixon Hospital, but were treated and released. Amboy, Dixon City, Dixon Rural, Troy Grove, LaMoille and Mendota Fire Departments assisted Sublette Fire battling the blaze for over three hours. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but a number of the rooms in the home were damaged.
