Mendota city council votes to approve new TIF district

Proposed TIF District

MENDOTA – A new Tax Increment Finance District that encompasses much of the Mendota business areas was voted on Monday night. The Mendota City Council voted to approve the district 7-0. Over 500 vacant and improved properties are to be included in the project area. The funds raised would be used for improvements in the district. In a published summary, the city noted that they intend to use the TIF to promote commercial, retail, and residential development.
Mayor David Boelk said “Well, we lost Del Monte and that is in the new TIF District. We will really want to get something back in there and/or clean it up so we have a chance to get something else”
He further noted “This goes right through our downtown, which we have been working hard on it, but it has a long way to go. Prescott Brothers is looking at updating and putting in a new dealership. This will enhance another major corridor in the city of Mendota. Starved Rock Wood Products has been an amazing employer, who has benefited from a previous TIF district”
