Mendota Nurse to travel to New York to battle pandemic

MENDOTA – A nurse from Mendota answered the call to help in New York City as they battle the ongoing pandemic caused by the novel Coronavirus COVID-19. Jennifer Escatel was contacted by a recruiter from a company seeking staffing at New York University. Escatel, a 37-year-old mother of four, who has been a registered nurse for twelve years, will be leaving  to spend eight weeks in Manhattan working long shifts.
“I don’t think anyone could ever be prepared for what I’m walking in to” Escatel said, “it’s like a war zone out there.”
She’ll be staying at a hotel in Times Square about two miles from the hospital. Her flight leaves Sunday. She said her family supports her.
“My older daughters have expressed how heroic they feel that it is, and they are scared I am leaving and what could happen, but at the same time, they know this is just who I am, and they think it’s pretty cool.”
Escatel is planning on returning at the end of May.
