MENDOTA – The Mendota Police Department announced that they will be taking part in an initiative called the One Mind Campaign to help handle calls that involve mental illness. Chief Gregory Kellen made the decision to join the program because law enforcement engages with a number of individuals suffering a mental crisis or illness. The department has established a partnership with a local mental health organization, developed and implemented a model policy to address interactions by officers with those that are mentally ill, and provided crisis response training. Experts say as many as 20% of all calls for service from law enforcement are related to mental illness.
