New Land For State Parks Bought With Open Space Grants

OGLESBY-The expansion of Starved Rock State Park and Matthiessen State Park announces Thursday by Governor Bruce Rauner has been in the planning stages for three years.    That’s according to the Department of Natural Resources head Wayne Rosenthal.  The Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development Program was used to fund the 11-million dollar purchase of former mining ground now owned by a company named Lone Star. The state-financed fund has around 81-million dollars in it, stated Governor Rauner at Starved Rock Lodge, that can only be used for purchases like this.   Over 2,600 acres will be added to the parks, with plans for additional parking, new trails, and more access to the Vermillion River.
