MENDOTA – A home in Mendota suffered mostly smoke damage after a fire on New Years Eve. Thursday afternoon Mendota and Troy Grove Fire Departments were called to the 300 block of 9th Street after a neighbor reported seeing smoke. According to Mendota Fire Chief Dennis Rutishauser, pets were taken from the home to safety. Firefighters went to work quickly on the outside of the structure, where it appeared that an electrical wire had shorted out and started the outside of the home on fire. No injuries were reported, and the residents, who were not home when the fire started, were allowed to return to the home.
