PEORIA – The World Health Organization declared the new coronavirus a global health emergency, however local health leaders say the seasonal flu is far more concerning. According to OSF HealthCare, in Illinois and throughout the country, health facilities are mostly treating an Influenza B-Victoria strain, that hasn’t been seen since the 1992-1993 season.
Terri McCrery, infection preventionist for OSF, says the numbers affected by the new coronavirus can’t compare to the seasonal flu.
Even if you don’t get sick often, McCrery says it only takes one exposure to the long-lasting airborne virus.Those who have flu-like symptoms are highly encouraged to be seen early, because the flu can turn into pneumonia or bronchitis.
