A motorized glider has crashed while landing at an airport near Sheridan, critically injuring the pilot. Newark Fire Protection District spokesman Earl Thompson says the accident happened Saturday morning at Cushing Fields Airport. Thompson says the pilot was initially trapped in the wreckage. The man was taken to a hospital in Downers Grove after what Thompson described as a “heavy extraction.” Authorities say the pilot is in his early 60s and is from the Chicago suburb of Warrenville.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the cause of the crash.
