Residents outraged over “used car” tax in Ottawa

OTTAWA – Residents spoke out against a used car tax that they say were billed for the day after Christmas. During public comment at Tuesday’s city council meeting, multiple residents say there was no prior announcement to the tax they got in the mail after the holiday. According to Mayor Dan Aussem, the .5% tax for titled vehicles was passed in 2004, but never enforced. Aussem says car dealers from other communities are using the tax as leverage or incentive to buy outside of Ottawa. He says the ordinance is not based where you buy, but where you live and regrets the timing of the letters to residents.
