PONTIAC – Scammers are contacting area residents by phone, text message and email in an attempt to swindle victims. That’s according to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office. They say that victims are being sent fraudulent checks and that they are then instructed to cash the checks and purchase gift cards or iTunes cards and mail them back to the scammer. These transactions often involve thousands of dollars. The scam leaves the victim out the amount of the fake check and the gift cards. If you feel you have been a victim, you should contact the police. These individuals often target the elderly, and if you receive an unsolicited call immediately hang up.
