Streator High School teacher pitches Marilla Park shelter build to city officials

 
STREATOR – A Streator High School teacher is ready to gear up with his students to give back to the community and build a new shelter for Marilla Park. Woodworking and welding teacher for Streator High School and former building contractor, David Taylor, expressed his passion for teaching the craft and the desire to be more hands-on with his students.

After Taylor’s student’s talked about the picnic pavilion at Marilla Park aging, he took a drive there after school and thought why not have a barn raising style build for a new shelter.
The 20 x 40 timber frame pavilion would be crafted of white oak, indigenous to the area. The posts would stand eight feet high, with 3 x 6 rafters placed two feet apart from each other.
Taylor says he’s carefully picked a special group of 20 students fit for the role.
If the city approves the project, Taylor plans to start working on-site in the spring of next year with a completion date before graduation. He says Streator High School officials are on board.
