Streator Resident Nearly Victim of $10,000 Scam

STREATOR – An elderly person from Streator had apparently already shipped a package with $10,000 in it unknowingly to Social Security scammers on Friday, but police were able to intervene.  The Streator Police Department helped a resident recover the funds before they were delivered to a New Jersey address.  The victim had received a call from someone who said they need to pay the large fee in order to resume their Social Security benefits.  The scammer claimed that the residents information had been used in the commission of a crime.   The Streator Police Department would like to remind everybody that government agencies do not contact people by phone and if you have any questions or concerns about unsolicited calls demanding money please let them know.
