PERU – A 6 million dollar grant was awarded to the city of Peru to improve railroad between Plank Road and Route 251. The Peru Intermodal, Safety, Congestion, and Energy Security Project, is part of a series of projects aimed at improving rail access and expanding the routes needed to safely and efficiently haul materials produced in the city, according to Congressman Adam Kinzinger who applauded the grant.
Kinzinger said, “This grant award for the City of Peru is great news for the 16th Congressional District and our entire region. With this investment, city officials can move forward on plans to improve railway routes and the capacity to access new economic opportunities. I’m grateful to the Department of Transportation for recognizing the needs in our community and the value that the City of Peru’s Pisces II Project will bring to the area.”
City Finance Officer Justin Miller says the city was named as a recipient for the application filed by OmniTrax/Illinois Railway. The city has worked with the rail service company on a few grants, one concerning the expansion of Unytite Drive. Miller says the city has zero commitment to the rail improvements, but are putting in $750,000 dollars to the Unytite expansion that is set to begin soon.
