DEKALB – The first case of Monkeypox has been discovered among the students at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. On Thursday NIU President Lisa Freeman announced that the student who tested positive is isolating and receiving health care in the hopes of a full recovery. She said the student has had minimal contact with the community and has not attended in-person classes. The DeKalb County Health Department has initiated contact tracing with close contacts, who are being instructed to monitor for symptoms over the next 21 days. Monkeypox is a viral infection that is primarily spread through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact. Symptoms usually start within three weeks of exposure to the virus. Someone who has flu-like symptoms typically can expect to develop a rash one to four days later. MPV is not fatal, and most cases are resolved within two to four weeks.
