FARMERSVILLE – A massive interstate pileup in downstate Illinois injured almost forty people and took six lives. The Illinois State Police say that around 11 AM on Monday there were crashes on both the northbound and southbound sides of Interstate 55 near Farmersville in Montgomery County. A two-mile stretch of the interstate quickly became the scene of dozens of crashes caused by poor visibility from blowing dust from nearby fields. A total of 72 vehicles were involved in the incident, injuring 37 and killing six. Authorities say the injuries range from minor to life-threatening. The northbound and southbound lanes remain closed on I-55, awaiting an inspection from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
