Turkey Preparation Key to Safe Thanksgiving

OTTAWA – With Thanksgiving approaching the CDC wants to remind those in charge of cooking to be aware of some tips to keep the holiday safe and healthy. They say that you should thaw your turkey in a refrigerator or in a sink of cold water that is changed every 30 minutes.  A turkey should never be thawed on a counter. Raw poultry can spread harmful bacteria, so always wash your hands and all surfaces that come into contact with an uncooked turkey. Your bird should also be cooked in an oven set at least to 325 degrees and do not eat until it has a safe internal temperature of 165 degrees. Stuffing should be cooked in advance if possible. Be mindful of leftovers this holiday season as well, and make sure to get them chilled quickly below 40 degrees within two hours of being originally served.
