OGLESBY-Martha Hoffman of Earlville earned the Frederick W. Matthiessen Award at Illinois Valley Community College’s 52nd annual commencement Saturday.
The award, among the college’s most prestigious, is awarded periodically to graduates who demonstrate academic excellence and extraordinary service to the college and community. The award is named for Mr. Matthiessen (1835-1918), a philanthropist, industrialist, and former mayor of LaSalle who was instrumental in the creation of Matthiessen State Park among many other humanitarian and public service works.
On April 30, Hoffman was honored in Dallas for being named a New Century Transfer Pathway Scholar. Only one Transfer Scholar is selected from each state; she was among more than 2,000 students nominated from 1,600 colleges across the country.
The daughter of Winifred Hoffman and the late Kenneth Hoffman, Hoffman was the 2016 Earlville High School valedictorian and this spring was named an IVCC McCormack Scholar. Next fall, she will transfer to Northern Illinois University to study communications.
A student representative to IVCC’s agriculture advisory committee, Hoffman has donated 600-dozen eggs from her chicken flock to the local food pantry, among dozens of other charitable acts. She was Editor-in-Chief of the IV Leader and last fall was named an IVCC Foundation 21st Century Scholars Society finalist.
“Martha was a remarkable student leader for our agriculture program, the student newspaper and our Phi Theta Kappa chapter. She emerged from among several exceptional student leaders to claim this celebrated honor,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran.
Hoffman was one of about 245 graduates to participate in commencement. Dr. Larry Huffman, former IVCC President and board member, delivered the keynote address and Lara Petersen of Hennepin read her winning Paul Simon student essay.
